Dante's Inferno, Cantos Nine and Ten

Canto Nine:
1. "I knew assuredly he was sent to us from Heaven." (lines 75-76). This, again, shows how God still has some sort of control in Hell. The guards of the city were hesitant to let Dante in because he was a living being, and yet they let an angel in without a second thought.

2. "Some sepulchers grow hotter, and some less." (line 119). The segregation of different sins in different levels of Hell, and the levels within those levels, is interesting considering that Dante was religious. The Bible says that God believes every sin is equal. It suggests a bit of heresy because Dante is using his own laws and opinions to create a picture of Hell as opposed to the word of God.

Canto Ten:
1. "But when the Lady's face who rules this place..." (line 74). This, along with the appearance of Beatrice, suggests that women rule in both Heaven and Hell. Satan and God might be the figureheads, but women are the ones who are really in charge. Just like in our government, the President is a figurehead and other people actually make the decisions and do the work.
